主讲人先容:

Professor Martin Halliwell is Professor of American Studies and Head of the School of English at the University of Leicester. His research interests span twentieth-century and contemporary American literature, American cultural and intellectual history, film after 1945, and the history of medicine and psychology. He was the 18th Chair of the British Association for American Studies, 2010-2013 and currently is a Guest Professor at SISU.

Dr Mark Rawlinson is Reader in English Literature in the School of English and Academic Director for the College of Arts, Humanities and Law at the University of Leicester. He works primarily on nineteenth-century and twentieth-century literature, especially narrative fiction and poetry, and he has a particular focus on the literature of war.

讲座概况:
Urbanization was a central element in the modernization of Western cultures as the dominant social and geographical form of industrial capitalism. However, this account misses significant local inflections in the built environment and its associated forms of life, and also in the ways in which that urban experience was represented by and to those who lived in cities. The speakers - experts respectively in the cultural significance of the American and the British city - will compare literary and visual depictions of urban life over the last two centuries, focusing on London and New York City, and will initiate a debate about transatlantic urbanism.
